Seats held by 6,073 incumbent state legislators were up for election in 2018. Of those, 4,952 (82 percent) filed for re-election.[1]
In 2018, 469 incumbents were defeated in primary elections and the general elections on November 6, 2018.

From 2010 to 2016, about 13 percent of state legislative incumbents were defeated by primary challengers. Another 8 percent of the remaining incumbents were defeated in general elections. In 2018, 14.0 percent of incumbents who faced a primary challenger were defeated.
Context of the 2018 elections
In the 50 states, there are 99 state legislative chambers and 7,383 state legislative seats. In November 2018, 87 of these 99 chambers held general elections for a total of 6,073 seats—about 82 percent of all state legislative seats in the country.

Incumbents defeated in state primaries
Of the 4,952 incumbent state legislators seeking re-election in 2018, 1,054 (21.3 percent) faced a primary challenger. Eight hundred and ninety-seven legislators (85.9 percent) facing a primary challenger in 2018 won.[1]
- Of the 2,188 Democratic incumbents running for re-election, 487 (21.1 percent) faced a primary challenger. Of those, 70 (14.4 percent) were defeated.
- Of the 2,764 Republican incumbents running for re-election, 559 (20.2 percent) faced a primary challenger. Of those, 77 (13.8 percent) were defeated.
