CEO | Trying to make the impossible trivial

Many of you have reached out about the op-ed piece in Time Magazine penned by Sam Altman and Arianna Huffington, that talks about the transformative impact AI could have in bringing about a positive change in human health behaviors. Some healthcare influencers, such as Blake Madden, have expressed passionate skepticism at the notion that technology can help address behavior change at all. So, I thought I would share some thoughts here ... The US has the highest rate of people with multiple chronic conditions, and an obesity rate nearly twice the OECD average. The US has the highest death rates for avoidable or treatable conditions, the lowest life expectancy at birth, the highest maternal and infant mortality, and among the highest suicide rates. Americans see physicians less often than people in most other countries. We have a growing physician shortage. We have a growing physician burnout problem. We have a well-documented empathy gap amongst clinicians. There is a growing patient mistrust, dissatisfaction, and disengagement with healthcare professionals. Healthcare spending, both per person and as a percentage of GDP continues to be far higher in the US than in any other high-income country. These problems are getting worse! The answer cannot simply be, let's employ more humans to intervene. The answer cannot simply be, let's develop more drugs that mask the root causes of chronic conditions. The answer must be that we find ways for technology to support us, to help caregivers be more effective, and to reduce the overall cost of care so future generations can enjoy a meaningful quality of life. Technology designed to manage electronic health records is not the answer. Technology designed to automate marketing campaigns is not the answer. Technology designed to engage patients based on a priori population segmentation is not the answer. Then what is? Well, I'm biased. I believe that AI is the human super power that can save us from ourselves. Humans can either choose to use it for good, or for destructive purposes. However, AI is also a new and complex technology, and in the hands of people who do not fully grasp it, no matter how well intentioned, AI can create new problems. In the right hands, AI solutions can help transform healthcare. They can be designed to complement human-to-human encounters and improve health outcomes for all. Algorithms can learn to be more empathetic and engage humans in personalized ways to support better decision-making and navigate our complex healthcare system. There is an opportunity to do good, and we must try! At Lirio, this is our mission. We see real-world evidence that our approach to n=1 personalization through our Large Behavior Model engages previously unengaged people and drives equitable outcomes across interventions and demographic segments. Please read this insightful article by my colleague Amy Bucher about key considerations when designing AI systems for human behavior change.

“One of our most exciting projects at Lirio is digging in to how Precision Nudging can effectively influence behavior across cultures--with the eventual goal of not only helping people be healthier, but also adding to our understanding of how health behaviors can be nudged in global contexts.” - Amy Bucher

Chief Behavioral Officer at Lirio & Author of Engaged: Designing for Behavior Change

As my team works through cross-cultural adaptation of our intervention designs, I appreciate posts like this one from Elina Halonen at Square Peg Insight with resources for "de-weirdifying behavioral science." https://lnkd.in/emNrHjBw If you're not familiar with the term WEIRD applied to human subjects research, it's an acronym: Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (not included in the acronym but worth mentioning is "undergraduate student who participated in the research as a course requirement" 😜). A lot of classical behavioral science research has looked at phenomena among people from WEIRD contexts without also studying the same phenomena in non-WEIRD context, meaning that "foundational" findings may not universal. We can't assume that because something is true in a WEIRD population it holds true for others. Culture and context matter when it comes to behavior. One of our most exciting projects at Lirio is digging in to how Precision Nudging can effectively influence behavior across cultures--with the eventual goal of not only helping people be healthier, but also adding to our understanding of how health behaviors can be nudged in global contexts. If you have resources in addition to Elina's fantastic list, I'd appreciate your recommendations!
