Responsibilities

The District Court Referees are responsible for conducting hearings and making findings and recommendations in matters regarding the establishment, modification, enforcement, and collection of child, spousal, or medical support and paternity matters and any other matters as assigned by the District Court. A District Court Judge enters the Referee’s recommendations as an Order. District Court Referees conduct hearings in the same manner as the District Court. Testimony heard by the Referees is electronically preserved. The District Court Referees are impartial triers of fact and are subject to the provisions of the Nebraska Judges Code of Judicial Conduct.

In all cases, only parties to the case and witnesses summoned to court will be allowed in the courtroom. Please do not bring children. The presence of children in the courtroom may require that your court date be continued.

If you are unable to appear in person due to incarceration or your distance from Douglas County, please call the Office of the District Court Referee so the Referees can determine whether your case is appropriate for a video appearance.
