Chairman's Speech
Mar 2007
Dear Fellow Indians,
On this day, when the first 100 MW Unit
of the 300 (3x100) Baspa-II Hydroelectric
Project in District Kinnaur in Himachal
Pradesh has started generating power,
we at the Jaypee Group rededicate ourselves
to contribute to the infrastructural developed
of this great country of immense potential and
myriad opportunities, in this century.
For more than one reason, today is one of the most
memorable days for every one in the Jaypee Group
.
300 MW Baspa-II Hydroelectric Project is the largest
project to be commissioned in the private sector in India.
It's barrage is at an elevation of 2520.50 meters,
the highest altitude for any such structure to
come up in India. It is above the snowline with
snowfall of the order of 4.5 metres and temperature
as low as (-)15 degree Celsius.
55 km 400 kv transmission line (121 towers) passes
through an elevation of 2350 meters in most
difficult terrain involving crossing the valley
13 times.
Electromechanical and hydro mechanical equipment
for this project weighing 20,000 tonnes
had to be carted over 300km in hilly terrain.
Eight bridges, spanning upto maximum of 132 meters,
were constructedt various locations between Wangtoo.
upstream of Nathpa on NH-22 and kuppa (barrage site)
to cater for maximum loading of 70R
Jaypee Ventures Limited, an associate company of
the Jaypee group, has undertaken the project from
concept to commissioning. It is the only consultancy
company in Hydro-Power to be associated with four
Hydroelectric Projects in the country, namely:
Chamera-II, Baghlihar, Vishnuprayag.
We truly believe that the water flowing
through rivers of our country is not only a
natural resource but ‘liquid gold’ which if
harnessed properly can serve the nation in more
than one way. Nature has bestowed our country
with a bounty of this resource readily available
for exploitation for the benefit of the common man.
For some mystic reason we, in the Jaypee group,
have an inexplicable affinity to the construction
of Hydro-Power Projects for over two decades and
it is not a coincidence that Jaiprakash Industries
Limited is engaged in developing 11 Hydro Electric
Projects in India and 1 in Bhutan, which on
completion would generate 8520 MW of hydro power.
A unique distinction and for which the entire Group
stands committed to deliver.
The Group’s second own Hydro-Power Project, the
400 MW Vishnuprayag Project in Uttaranchal is slated
for commissioning in 2006. The work on 1000 MW Karcham
Wangtoo Hydroelectric Project. Also in Kinnaur
District of Himachal Pradesh for another of the Group’s
own generating company shall be completed by 2009.
We take this opportunity to express our grateful
thanks to the State Government of Himachal Pradesh,
the Government of India, Financial Institutions of Banks,
various departments of the State and Centre but for
whose support, timely help and guidance, we would
not have achieved this performance.Baspa-II is a
classic example of what a group of iron-willed
Indians with an indomitable spirit, fired with
a passion to create national assets, can achieve!
