Movie Review: "The Great Wall" is Far From Great, But it's Eye Popping, Campy Fun

THE GREAT WALL Starring Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal, Tian Jing, Willem Dafoe, Andy Lau  Story by Max Brooks and Marshall Hershkovitz & Edward Zwick Screenplay by Caro Bernard & Doug Miro and Tony Gilroy Directed by Zhang Yimou Reviewed by Paul & Patick Gibbs Out of Four A s critics, we generally get to go into a Hollywood film relatively fresh, before too much buzz has built up to give us a strong expectation as to its quality, but The Great Wall  isn't a normal Hollywood movie: it's a Chinese and American production, the first big blockbuster English language film from famed Chinese director Zhang Yimou (2011's The Flowers of War , starring Christian Bale, was still considered a Chinese language film), and this fantasy epic opened in China on December 15, 2016. There's already been a good deal of press about it, and while it has done well at the box office, it has also faced some pretty harsh reviews and accusations of "whitewashing", wi

John Williams Wins His 23rd Grammy For The Force Awakens

He's done it again.  Well actually this was the 23rd time and at the age of 85.  Yes, John Williams has picked up another Grammy.  The awards were held last night and The CBS network broadcasted the show live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.  You can see the full list of winners here but the one we're interested in is the Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media category. John Williams won his 23rd Grammy for Star Wars: The Force Awakens .  He was going up against Thomas Newman who stepped in to replace John Williams for Steven Spielberg's Bridge of Spies ,  Ennio Morricone The Hateful Eight , Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto's The Revenant and the excellent soundtrack to Stranger Things by Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein. His previous victory at the Grammys was for The Book Thief back in 2014 in the Best Instrumental Composition category.  The first time John Williams won a Grammy was way back in 1976 for a little movie called Jaws . Congratulations Mr

On set live footage of Steven Spielberg's 'Ready Player One'

Steven Spielberg's new upcoming American science fiction thriller 'Ready Player One' is being filmed in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham, England. He has transformed the historic part of the city into a dystopian American future. Street signs are changed, shop fronts have been converted with photos of dollar scratch cards, and whole roads are being completely transformed. The extras showing off the huge VR goggles appear to be quite outdated. You can also see the mail/postal van being filmed racing through the smoke filled streets. Movie Review: "John Wick Chapter 2" Gives Audiences Plenty of Bang For Their Buck

JOHN WICK CHAPTER 2 Starring Keanu Reeves, Common, Riccardo Scimarcio, Laurence Fishburne, Ruby Rose, Ian McShane and Franco Nero Written by Derek Kolstad Directed by Chad Stahelski Reviewed by Paul & Patrick Gibbs Out of Four 2 014's cult hit John Wick was a guilty pleasure that won a lot of praise from critics and action fans alike for its intricate staging, unapologetic brutality and total lack of pretense. Nobody was claiming that this was anything other than what it was: a masterfully executed violence ballet with a very dark comic edge. It took the industry term of "killing the dog" (the moment in a screenplay when the villain does something so despicable that it becomes firmly established that not only do they deserve to lose, they  must be taken down) and used it in the most literal way possible: bad guys killed former assassin John Wick's dog, therefore they must pay, and that's the movie! It was a premise that was ridiculously thin an

Movie Review: DC Finally Scores Again with "The Lego Batman Movie"

THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE Starring the voices of Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Zach Galifinakis and Ralph Fiennes Screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith and Chris McKenna and Eric Summers Directed by Chris McKay Reviewed by Patrick Gibbs   Out of Four I was probably the first person to take to the internet in defense of Ben Affleck when he was cast as Batman, and I still believe that there is plenty of potential there (I love his look, and he was easily the best part of Suicide Squad .). But the charactization made necessary by the messy storyline of Batman v. Superman  was a constant contradiction that ranged from disturbing to unintentionally hilarious.  It was a dark and brooding, murderously angry take on Batman that still has moments where it out-camps Joel Schumacher. As such, there was almost nowhere to go with character but up, much like George Clooney's portrayal in Batman & Robin.   But why do we fall, Bruce? So we can pick ourselves back up again. Th
